Title of Presentation: Speak Out- Using Technology to motivate and engage language learners.

Description: 21st century learning is not just about computers, it is about enhancing learning through higher order and critical thinking skills, and the ability to differentiate and personalize learning. The main idea of this workshop is to develop innovative teaching ideas and strategies to enhance student’s motivation in language learning - with a focus on speaking skills. This workshop will provide opportunities to unlock the language learning potential of the iPod Touch, iPad and computers as language teachers from UWCSEA share examples of best practice, with minimum effort and maximum results.

Participants will be able to gather ideas, tips and techniques to set up their own speaking activities with a focus on:
  • Smart devices such as iPod Touches and iPad for oral assessments (formative and summative assessments), extensions and differentiated activities.
  • Laptops
- use web-based programmes
- voki to cater individual needs and provide a differentiated activity;
- languagelingt for assessment and teacher feedback
- use Audacity for audio recording as part of assessment.

This workshop will help teachers build up their confidence, increase student-engagement and give them some practical tools they can start using in the classroom straight away.

“Technology isn’t magic. It doesn’t provide instant solutions. It challenges teachers to improve their practice by being more flexible and creative, and it challenges students to reflect on the limitations of technology as well as its capabilities. The best way to learn is by practising together.” IBO Website 2010"
